Engineer License
The Engineer License is required of anyone operating or maintaining any steam or high temperature hot water boiler, steam engine, portable or stationary hoisting engine or refrigeration machinery. This license must be renewed annually.

Classes
- Engineer Grade A license – allows for Steam Boiler, Stationary, Refrigeration Engineers and Fireman
- Engineer Grade B license – Refrigeration only
- Engineer Grade C license – Portable and Stationary only
- Engineer Grade D license – Fireman only

Eligibility Requirements
- Proof of Certification
- Successful completion of the examination for the appropriate Engineer Grade as administered by the International Code Council within one year prior to this application.
- Note: Pre-approval by the Department of Licenses & Inspections is not required for the examination.
- Successful completion of the examination for the appropriate Engineer Grade as administered by the International Code Council within one year prior to this application.
- Experience
- At least two (2) years’ experience as an assistant engineer or helper
- Recommendation
- Two (2) licensed engineers’ recommendations are required
- Photo ID
- 2”x2” photo ID (passport quality).
- Age
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Fee(s)
- Initial Application
- There is a non-refundable application fee of $20.00 which is applied towards the cost of the License ($50.00). The balance of the license fee is due upon application approval.
- License Renewal Application
- $50.00
RETURNED CHECKS: If your check is returned unpaid for insufficient or uncollected funds, (1) you authorize The City of Philadelphia or its agent to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account to collect a fee of $20; and (2) The City of Philadelphia or its agent may re-present your check electronically to your depository institution for payment.
